On October 2nd, the United Way of the Piedmont will join us to conduct a Poverty Simulation at a special time: 6-8pm. Join us to learn first-hand what it is like to live in poverty. Space is limited. Please register by clicking the button below. You don't want to miss this unique opportunity!

Description (from United Way of the Piedmont)
Imagine having to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table. Approximately 18% of individuals and 28% of children in Spartanburg County live in poverty - many of them struggling with hunger and homelessness, which become root causes of other significant challenges. United Way's Poverty Simulation is an experience that offers a glimpse into the realities and complexities of living on a low income - all through the eyes of fictional families that are trying to survive from month to month.

How does the Poverty Simulation work?
The poverty simulation is comprised of four 15-minute "weeks" and three 5-minute "weekends," representing one full month of challenges and budgeting.

Participants are organized into family units. Each participant is assigned a family role and each unit is assigned a "story" that describes their specific financial situation.

Using resources set up around the room, families must perform day-to-day tasks: sending children to school or childcare, getting to or finding work, paying bills and buying groceries, visiting social services and other community agencies, and cashing checks at the bank. All while navigating life's unexpected challenges.

Following the exercise, participants will debrief to discuss their experiences, learning more about the obstacles faced by people living in poverty and gaining a greater understanding of the important role United Way plays within the community.

Who should participate?
We encourage anyone over the age of 16 to participate! The simulation is extremely eye-opening and impactful for everyone. No previous experience or knowledge is necessary to participate.

The success of the simulation is highly dependent on the number of participants, so please only sign up if you are able to participate for the full 2 hours. Please plan to arrive on time (5 minutes early). Notify Hannah Jarrett at United Way 24 hours in advance if you are unable to attend the simulation for any reason.
