Music
has been an integral part of the life of First Presbyterian Church for
many years. The congregation has long appreciated the talents and
efforts the church's musicians have made to improve the worship life of
the church, and the program enjoys a strong reputation in the community
for its special concerts and outreach efforts.
There are opportunities for people of all ages to participate in the
musical life of the church. Children, youth and adults have musical
ensembles available to them, all with well-trained and enthusiastic
leadership. Below is a listing of the choirs currently offered.
For more information on any of these choirs contact Holt Andrews.

Children's Choirs
|
There
are four separate choirs for children starting at 4K and running
through 5th grade. Children's choirs meet on Wednesday evenings
starting at 5:15pm. Choirs for younger children concentrate on
providing fun and enriching musical experiences with beginning vocal
training and an introduction to the music of the church. Choirs for
older children continue this emphasis while adding specific musical and
vocal training, hymn education, instruments, and opportunities to sing
in worship. You may register your child for choir by clicking
here.
For more information about the Children's Music Program contact Marcia
Andrews at the church (208-2135) or at home (597-1750). |

Youth Choirs and Ensembles
|
| OneWay
is our new ensemble for grades 6-8 and is especially suited to this
lively age group. Their time together is spent on African drumming,
singing, playing handbells, First Pres "Stomp", guitar, and other
instruments of their choice. Leaders are Leigha Singleton and Lisa
Cunningham. OneWay rehearses Sunday afternoons, 4:45-5:30pm.
For young people in grades nine
through twelve, the Sr. High Choir is an opportunity to
contribute to the worship life of the church by singing regularly at
the 8:45am service. It is open to trained and untrained musicians
alike, with a deliberate attempt to keep the music "user-friendly"
while at the same time teaching musical and singing skills. It is also
a great way to find friends and for fellowship; group-building is an
important part of the choir. Plans are underway for a choir tour in the
spring of 2008. The Youth Choir rehearses Sunday afternoons from
4:30-5:45pm.
CrossWalk Band our youth
ensemble for 8th-12th graders. They rehearse on Wednesday
evenings, 6:30-7:30pm. CrossWalk is composed of young singers and
instrumentalists and is led by Leigha Singleton, our Youth Music
Associate.
Youth who play instruments are
encouraged to share their gifts as their ability levels allow.
Instrumentalists are a regular part of Youth Choir rehearsals and
performances, and on occasion special instrumental ensembles are
utilized.

Chancel Choir (back to top)
|
Three
singing choirs and a handbell choir are available to interested adults.
The Chancel Choir, composed of around 50 members, sings
regularly at the church's 11:00 AM worship service and presents special
programs during the course of the year. The choir, known for its strong
musical standards and high-quality performances, is open to anyone who
wishes to join. Musical and vocal training are provided to choir
members who need or desire it. The Chancel Choir rehearses Wednesday
evenings at 7:30pm September through May.
The Summer Choir and Christmas Eve Choir are open to
all adults (and High School students) who enjoy singing but are unable
to be regular members of the Chancel Choir. The Christmas Eve Choir
rehearses prior to Christmas and performs at both of the church's
popular Candlelight services on Christmas Eve. The Summer Choir meets
on Sunday mornings at 10:15 from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Participants rehearse music for that Sunday only and sing at the 11:00
a.m. worship service.. |

Madrigal Singers
|
| The
Madrigal Singers is a 25 voice choir designed for singers who enjoy
intensive preparation of music suitable for smaller choral groups. The
Madrigal Singers perform on occasion at the 8:45 service and prepare
special programs throughout the year. They are especially noted for
their Christmas music, and have produced a CD titled "Veni Emmanuel".
They are regularly invited to perform at the Biltmore House, especially
during the Christmas season. Membership is open in consultation with
the director. At times certain sections may be closed in order to
maintain a good balance between the parts. |
|
Bell Choir (back to top)
|
The
Adult Handbell Choir rehearses on Tuesdays at 6:00pm and performs
periodically in worship, retirement homes, and community events.
Membership is open to adults and qualified youth as space permits. The
ability to read music is helpful, but motivated beginners can and have
enjoyed success as members of this group.
