Then Moses answered, “But suppose they do not believe me or listen to me, but say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you.’ “ The LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” Exodus 4:1-2

Mrs. King was the first pastor’s wife I remember. She was a jovial woman who wore her hair in a Gibson Girl style. She recruited me, a teenager, to teach a Sunday School class of 5 four-year-old boys. Teaching the little boys was a challenge. Mrs. King’s support was enabling. She was the first to show me I could help out in the church.

Cecilia was a preacher’s wife from more recent years. She was young, sweet-natured, and always willing to lend a hand. She once gave a devotional at a PW meeting using Exodus 4:1-2 as the text. God speaks to Moses asking, “What is that in your hand?” Cecilia asked us that question. As we talked, ideas bubbled up: knitting needles, tool boxes, favorite crock pot recipes. Cecilia did that herself, used whatever was in her hand to help others.

Prayer:
O Lord, thank you for those who have mentored us to grow in our faith journey. Open us to do that for others in your name. Amen.
