First Presbyterian Church-Spartanburg’s mission to Cuba began in 2007, when our congregation provided funds to construct the first floor of a Christian Education building at a growing church in central Cuba. In 2008 our Session formalized a sister-church relationship with the Presbyterian Church of Santa Clara, and two mission teams traveled to meet our Cuban partners. In February 2009, we celebrated our annual Witness Season campaign for international missions by raising $35,000 to construct the second story of the building in Santa Clara, now christened “El Edificio Spartanburg” - “The Spartanburg Building”-in honor of our work together.
On weeknights in Santa Clara, city youth gather in the Spartanburg Building for Christian Education to play guitar and dance late into the evening. Christian leaders from across the country gather in the Spartanburg Building to plan better ways to serve their congregations and to advance religious freedom. On Sunday mornings, children crowd into the first Sunday School classroom the Santa Clara church has ever had.
The Presbyterian Church in Santa Clara towers as an example of the real-world power of God’s love opened to everyone. First Presbyterian-Spartanbug travels twice annually to visit our sister church. To join in this mission, contact Scott Neely (sneely@fpcspartanburg.org/864-583-4531).
