Associate Pastor Nominating Committee

The APNC has embarked on a journey to find the next Associate Pastor of Congregational Care and Deacons at First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg!  We acknowledge the sacred trust placed upon us and pray for the power of God’s presence in each step of the search process. The APNC covets prayers, as well as referrals, while we work on behalf of the congregation to nominate the next minister to join our wonderful church staff.  We encourage you to make contact with any of our Committee members to share your thoughts, concerns or questions as we move forward.  Your input is highly valued and is vital to our discernment process.

The departure of Laura Palmer as Interim Associate Pastor will be a bittersweet moment in the life of FPC Spartanburg.  She has truly been a wonderful presence that has made an impact in our Church and Community.  The search is underway, but not for her replacement because Laura cannot be replaced.  Instead, we are in pursuit of someone who will follow her, bringing a new set of gifts to the role of Associate Pastor of Congregational Care.  Over the coming months, please take time to acknowledge Laura and share thanks for her good and faithful service.  Although we cannot replace her, we can send her off with our blessing and trust that God will call another outstanding candidate to our church family.

  • APNC – Associate Pastor Nominating Committee
  • CIF - Church Information Form - the document used to formally post the job opening with PC(USA) and describe the qualifications sought as well as providing a description of the church
  • CLC - Church Leadership Connection - PC(USA) candidate matching system
  • COM - Committee on Ministry - a committee of our Presbytery that assists/advises in the search/hiring process
  • FPC - First Presbyterian Church
  • PC(USA) - Presbyterian Church, USA, FPC’s denomination
  • PIF - Pastor Information Form - the “resume” compiled by pastors in the Presbyterian system; PIFs are matched with our CIF

3 Phases: Organize, Search and Select

Phase One: Organize

  • Conduct Congregational meeting – Elected slate of APNC nominees 9/9/12
  • Assembles APNC – Conducted organizational meeting 9/24/12
  • Submit position description for Session approval 9/25/12
  • Establish website - 10/1/12
  • Meet with Presbytery COM liaison
  • Develop CIF 10/1/12
  • Session & Presbytery approval of CIF – Initial version submitted 10/25/12, Approved 10/30/12
  • Submit CIF online to Church Leadership 10/30/12
  • Establish process to receive, review, and respond to applicants 10/15/12

Phase Two: Search

  • Communicate position opening and network
    • 17 PIF Matches
    • Solicit congregational leads
    • Request referrals from seminiaries, churches, presbyteries and synods
    • Contact referrals to invite interest
    • Advertise in appropriate publications
  • Develop Screening Process
  • Evaluate PIFs
  • Conduct preliminary interviews via telephone or Skype with qualified candidates
  • Check References
  • Narrow pool of candidates to “Short” list

Phase Three: Selection

  • Conduct background checks
  • Presbytery-to-Presbytery reference checks
  • Request permission to contact secondary references
  • Meet prospective pastors face-to-face
    • Visit their ministry setting if feasible
    • Host potential candidate in our community
    • Conduct formal interview
  • Extend the Call to the candidate of choice
  • Obtain Presbytery approval
  • Prepare a Report for the congregation
  • Obtain congregational approval
  • Welcome our new Associate Pastor
