Go Green: Ride Your Bike to Church

CycleTry using our new bike racks at FPC. As the weather continues to get nicer, consider walking or bicycling to an evening meeting at First Presbyterian or Wednesdays at First.

  • Each mile spent walking or bicycling instead of driving is one pound of CO2 that doesn’t enter the air we breathe. (Source: EPA)

Use a Mug!

First Presbyterian is gradually reducing our use of Styrofoam™ products in our facility.
Here are some reasons why:

  1. Styrofoam™ is a petroleum product. Petroleum is a heavily polluting, non-sustainable, disappearing resource.
  2. The opportunities for recycling Styrofoam™ are very limited, leading to more garbage in landfills.
  3. Styrofoam™ is not biodegradable. It breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces which enter the environment and never go away.

Patricia Webster (pwebster@fpcspartanburg.org) is Church Hostess at First Presbyterian Church.

FPC Grocery BagPlastic Bags Tips:

  • Did you know that it takes about 1,000 years for plastic bags to biodegrade?
  • Plastic bags distributed at shopping stores create environmental problems: pollution, oil consumption, overfilled landfills, and animal deaths.
  • Remember to carry your reusable bags wherever you do any shopping. The grocery store is the most obvious place, but remember those bags when going to the pharmacy, the farmer’s market, clothing stores, etc.
  • If you don’t have bags to use, buy one at First Pres.!

FPC member Mary Walter (spacemary1@bellsouth.net) is the Executive Director of the Spartanburg Area Conservancy (SPACE).
